About
*Now Looking for Volunteers for Fall 2022 Semester!* Updated August 25th, 2022: Applications for volunteers interested in serving with Horton's Kids for the 2022-2023 school year are open until September 12th.
Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We serve 500 children in grades K-12 living in Wellington Park & Stanton Oaks – neighborhoods that have been profoundly impacted by decades of disinvestment and barriers to opportunity.
Tutors assist the Academics team with implementing our high-intensity literacy curriculum. You will also provide social emotional support by being a consistent adult role model in the students’ lives who they can look up to and lean on for guidance. Every week, you will work with the same small group of students. If you are interested in the education field and can commit to volunteering the same day each week, this is a great opportunity.
These opportunities are in-person opportunities. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. All volunteers will be required to wear a mask inside of the Horton’s Kids program sites.
The addresses of the program sites are below:
- Wellington Park Community Resource Center: 2500 Pomeroy Rd. SE, Washington DC 20020
- Douglass Community Center: 1922 Frederick Douglass Court SE, Washington DC 20020
Prospective volunteers should be comfortable getting themselves to program sites independently, but transportation from the Anacostia metro station to the program sites may become available.
Accepted volunteers are expected to complete background checks and trainings before programs begin. Additionally, all volunteers must be fully vaccinated and submit proof of their vaccination. We ask volunteers to make a yearlong commitment from mid-September to late May.
