Event DescriptionUT Austin students will be working with the Neighborhood Longhorns Program to provide virtual tutoring for 2nd-5th grade students in a variety of subjects. Volunteers will assist Ms. Pamela McKinney at Govalle Elementary, who coordinates the ACE Tutoring Program at the school. NOTE: All volunteers must complete a background check through Austin Partners in Education (APIE). See Requirement Details for full instructions.

Registration will close 48 hours prior to each tutoring time slot. Your contact information will be shared with Ms. McKinney, and she will email you the Zoom login information. On the day and time specified, you will connect to Zoom and be assigned to a student group for homework help.

With virtual tutoring, the role emphasizes a person who can connect in a way that is encouraging, motivational and inspiring on an elementary school level.  Give a proper introduction such as, "My name is ______.  I attend The University of Texas at Austin and am a ______ major.  I am so glad to join you for homework."

Tips:

  • Be prepared with older elementary students who may divert the conversation and ask personal questions.
  • Share your enthusiasm for homework and why it is important.
  • Be prepared to read a book with younger students.
If you cannot attend the date you signed up for, please inform the event organizer as soon as possible. Thank you for volunteering!
